Spring Is Short in the Valley — Make Every Weekend Count

If you live in the Ottawa Valley, you know the deal: winter overstays its welcome, then suddenly it’s May and you’ve got a month of yard work, a cracked driveway, and a deck that needs rebuilding — all staring at you at once.
The good news? You don’t need to own every tool for a one-week job. Here’s what’s actually worth renting this spring, and why.
1. Dethatch and Aerate Before You Do Anything Else
After months under snow and ice, your lawn is compacted and smothered in thatch. Fertilizing or overseeding on top of that is mostly wasted effort.
Rent first: A lawn dethatcher followed by a lawn aerator opens up the soil so water, air, and seed can actually reach the roots. Do this early — late April to mid-May is ideal in the Valley — and everything you put down afterward will actually work.
2. Fix Frost Damage Before It Gets Worse
Ottawa Valley winters are hard on concrete and asphalt. Freeze-thaw cycles crack driveways, heave walkways, and pop out patio stones every single year.
For concrete repair and resurfacing:
- A concrete scarifier strips damaged surface layers cleanly
- A cement mixer handles patch batches without back-breaking manual mixing
- An air breaker (60 lbs) or breaker/chipper (35–70 lbs) makes short work of slabs that need to come out entirely
Rent the right tool for the scope. A hand sledge for a hairline crack; a breaker for anything structural.
3. Pressure Wash Everything
After a Valley winter, your deck, siding, driveway, and fences are coated in road salt residue, algae, and general grime. A gas 3200 PSI pressure washer will strip all of it in a fraction of the time a garden hose will.
If you have clogged eavestroughs or downspout lines, the pipe cleaning attachment (100′) will clear them out without calling a plumber.
Rent Smart, Work Fast
The Ottawa Valley spring window is real and it’s short. Renting the right equipment means you’re not fighting the job with the wrong tool, and you’re not storing something in your garage for eleven months waiting to use it once.
Plan your projects, book ahead on busy weekends, and get it done while the weather cooperates.
